Muriel "Mickie" Siebert

Muriel "Mickie" Siebert has been called "The First Woman of Finance." Nobody ever thought of calling her "First Lady" -- that would not describe scrappy Muriel Siebert any better than "Girl Scout" would have described Joan of Arc!

 Ms. Siebert is the founder and president of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) brokerage firm that bears her name, Muriel Siebert & Co., Inc. She established the firm in 1967 when she became the first woman member of the NYSE, and transformed the firm into a discount brokerage house on May 1, 1975, the first day that NYSE members were permitted to negotiate commissions. Muriel Siebert and Co. is the only woman-owned NYSE brokerage firm with a national presence. Ms. Siebert continues to oversee the firm's day-to-day operations at its seven branches. The firm's Siebert Brandford Shank & Co., LLC municipal affiliate is ranked in the top 25 public finance firms in the country.   full bio



Lee Bowman, National Coordinator, Community Affairs, Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation

Lee Bowman currently serves as the National Coordinator for Community Affairs with responsibility for FDIC’s provision of technical assistance to financial institutions, community-based organizations, government agencies and others on community reinvestment and consumer protection issues.   Mr. Bowman directed the expansion of the FDIC’s outreach to the unbanked and increased the initiative from one pilot market to 12 markets, resulting in the establishment of over 175,000 new banking relationships.  Lee directed the revision of the FDIC’s Money Smart education curriculum to include such topics as “Identity Theft” and a supplemental guide to assist instructors how to teach people with cognitive disabilities. Under Lee’s direction, the curriculum has also been translated in Braille and large print for those who have sight disabilities.   full bio



Shannon Buggs, Houston Chronicle's Financial Columnist

Shannon Buggs explores ways to make, save and spend money wisely in the “Assets & Values” column that appears on the Business section front every Monday. She also answers readers’ money management questions in the “Assets & Answers” column published every Thursday. In April 2007, Ms. Buggs launched “Business of Giving,” a biweekly column focused on business trends in philanthropy and the nonprofit sector published on the Chronicle’s Business section front every other Saturday. 

Before becoming a full-time columnist in 2007, Ms. Buggs wrote about banks, insurance companies, mutual funds and other financial service companies headquartered in Houston as the Chronicle’s financial reporter. She also wrote the weekly “Your Money” personal finance column for six years. Prior to joining the Chronicle in 1999, Ms. Buggs worked in Raleigh, N.C. for the daily News & Observer. Nida Qamar

A Sr. Portfolio Manager for the Small-to-Mid-Cap Growth team of the Cougar Investment Fund LLC at the University of Houston. She moved to the United States two years ago to pursue her Master of Science in Finance at UH after completing her MBA in Finance and Operations in India. She is currently working at Continental Airlines as a Sr. Financial Analyst in the Operations Controller Group. 




Leilani Lim-Villegas, Financial Education Coordinator, Texas Department of Banking

 

The Texas Department of Banking appointed Leilani Lim-Villegas as the new Financial Education Coordinator in 2006. Leilani will serve as the point of contact for information exchange to address financial education issues in Texas.  Prior to this position, Leilani served as the Public Information Officer for the Texas Residential Construction Commission for two years, and worked as a Special Audits Administrator for the Money Services Business division at the Texas Department of Banking for two years. Leilani also served as a Program Specialist in the International Relations Office for the Texas Department of Transportation.

Leilani will collaborate with financial institutions, federal, state and local agencies, minority groups, businesses, financial literacy groups and non-profit organizations to assist in promoting financial education to Texas communities.

Leilani graduated with a B.A. from the University of Nevada, Reno in International Affairs with double minors in Economics and Latin American Studies. She is pursuing a double Master in Public Administration and Latin American Studies from the University of Texas at Austin.  Leilani is multilingual: fluent in English, Spanish, Sign Language and Tagalog (Filipino Language), and has lived in the Philippines, Mexico and the United States. Leilani and her husband Alex reside in Austin, and are proud parents of their son, Leizandre D’Angelo.


Larry Stuart

Larry Stuart is President of HR Houston and serves on the Society for Human Resource Management’s Labor Relations Special Expertise Panel.  Larry is an Adjunct Professor in Management at Rice University’s Jones Graduate School of Management.  He graduated from the University of California at Irvine and from Tulane Law School.  Larry is Board Certified in labor and employment law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization and serves as co-director of the labor and employment law practice at Legge, Farrow, Kimmitt, McGrath & Brown LLP.
